MARLBOROUGH, MA - August 16, 2005 - SEPATON, Inc., the emerging leader in non-disruptive, high-performance data protection solutions, today announced that Cambridge Health Alliance, an innovative, award-winning health system that provides high quality care in Massachusetts' Cambridge, Somerville, Everett, Revere, and Boston's Metro-North communities, is using the SEPATON S2100 Virtual Tape Library (VTL) system, achieving data recovery and restore assurance while also reducing its backup window.
Dan Doherty, IT systems operations manager for Cambridge Health Alliance, explained that lost data has the potential to impact patient care as well as revenue so his department is required to perform nightly full backups of patient records stored in a combination of proprietary and packaged databases. "Our infrastructure consists of more than 150 Windows and Linux servers with 4,000 users storing approximately 15 TB of data per week. With nightly full back-ups to our traditional tape system taking close to 24 hours to complete, our backup window was shrinking to where we wouldn't be able to meet our daily backup requirements," said Doherty. "As importantly, we needed to store a second set of data off-site in case of an emergency but with little time left to complete even a full primary copy, our future recovery capabilities would be in jeopardy."
Doherty and the IT team began to research alternatives to physical tape, knowing increased capacity and data recovery assurance were paramount. After a thorough evaluation, SEPATON won hands-down. "The unit arrived pre-configured and worked out-of-the-box with our CommVault backup software," said Doherty. "Within 30 minutes, we had backup's under-way. Initially, we used a Command Line Interface to manage the appliance which we found fairly simple but the new SEPATON Graphical User Interface (GUI) is excellent and very easy to use. SEPATON's feature set is rich and its unique approach of writing data to the VTL so it's aware of the nature of the content is unmatched in the industry."
Using the SEPATON S2100 has meant that Doherty and his team can backup more than one TB of additional data each night in five hours less time and can easily restore data if needed. With a considerably larger backup window, Doherty is confident in his data recovery capabilities. "Our primary storage data sets are on the SEPATON appliance, freeing up the tape libraries to produce our secondary set which we take off-site. Today, we know with confidence that our secondary storage is assured in case of an emergency and our restores can be accomplished in minutes as it is no longer necessary to trek across campus to retrieve physical tapes. The S2100 has made a significant difference to our backup and recovery process," said Doherty.
Another benefit to the SEPATON VTL is that Doherty's team of tape administrators are no longer required to run tapes across campus and conduct time-consuming tape maintenance. The efficiency of the SEPATON VTL has allowed his staff to focus on more important and strategic IT initiatives.
"Like other enterprises today, Cambridge Health Alliance has recognized that VTL's have emerged as a proven alternative to traditional tape for secondary storage and a complement to physical tape in an organization's overall data protection strategy," said Mike Worhach, president and CEO, SEPATON, Inc. "We will continue to work closely with our customers to ensure that future product enhancements and new product deliverables solve the most pressing data protection requirements."
