SEPATON Unveils Next Generation of Its Award-Winning Enterprise Virtual Tape Library
Scales up to 1 PB at up to 4.3 TB per Hour in a Single Appliance; Integral Compression Technology Dramatically Reduces Cost of VTL Storage

SAN FRANCISCO --(BUSINESS WIRE)--, April 25, 2005 - SEPATON, Inc., the emerging leader in non-disruptive, high-performance data protection appliances, today unveiled at VERITAS Vision (Booth #407) the next generation of its award-winning enterprise Virtual Tape Library (VTL), the SEPATON S2100-ES2. The S2100-ES2 includes major advancements in the areas of scalability, performance, usability, and product functionality, providing customers with unmatched backup and restore capabilities that are the foundation for data protection best practices. Current SEPATON customers include leading businesses such as Brookhaven National Labs, China Life Insurance Co., Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Sepracor, Inc., Sovereign Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A, and Yahoo!.

"IT administrators charged with the day-to-day responsibility of backup and recovery face the constant, usually uphill battle of trying to maintain application performance levels, while ensuring that all the data that needs to be backed up is being backed up - and, importantly, that it is quickly and easily recoverable when needed," said Mike Worhach, president and CEO, SEPATON, Inc. "With the S2100-ES2, we are delivering the industry's most advanced VTL that dramatically out-performs tape and host-based D2D solutions, emulates the broadest variety of tape libraries, cost-effectively scales in capacity and performance, and supports the growing family of ReadyRestore(TM) applications. This provides customers with the ability to eliminate the pain of most backup and recovery processes and redirect valuable resources to other tasks."

"Disk based backup and recovery has proven to be of tremendous benefit to organizations seeking ways to improve the reliability and performance of their data protection infrastructure," said Carolyn DiCenzo, research vice president, Gartner, Inc. "Solutions that are easy to set up and use will be particularly attractive to storage administrators."

Highlights of SEPATON S2100-ES2 include:

-- Enhanced Performance and Scalability - The S2100-ES2 eliminates tape drive bottlenecks to dramatically shrink backup windows and has been enhanced to accelerate restore times with industry-leading backup speeds up to 4.3 TB per hour. Additionally, it can now scale from 3 terabytes (TB) to 1 petabyte (PB) of storage in a single appliance - the previous version scaled to 200 TB.

-- Powerful Data Control - The S2100-ES2 provides new features that give users greater control over data. Automatically move data to a virtual "fire safe" to free up VTL slots, while protecting moved data from overwriting. Transfer virtual tapes from one "library" to another on the S2100-ES2. Set up automatic compression of data according to customized backup policies. SEPATON's ContentAware(TM) architecture enables this new functionality.

-- Easy Integration and Improved Usability - Configuration and monitoring is made simple with the new browser-based SEPATON S2100 Management Console. Graphical views of the library, media management, and device management look exactly the same as the familiar tape library. A Command Line Interface (CLI) is also provided which provides access to all functions in the GUI.

-- Flexible Tape Emulation - The S2100-ES2 can be quickly configured to emulate a variety of automated tape libraries from StorageTek(R), Quantum(R), ADIC(R), IBM, and others. It now emulates up to 64 tape libraries simultaneously (up from 16), accommodating heterogeneous server/application environments with a single system to reduce overall costs.

The S2100-ES2 offers the flexibility to extend the capabilities of the appliance by adding SEPATON's exclusive ReadyRestore family of data protection applications built on the SEPATON ContentAware architecture. This revolutionary architecture enables customers to leverage investments in existing backup applications by adding new functionalities such as Synthetic Full Backup, remote site backup, content-based compression and other advanced capabilities, without forklift upgrades.

Pricing and Availability

The SEPATON S2100-ES2 is immediately available for purchase and will be sold worldwide directly through SEPATON and its channel partners. Starting at less than $60,000 USD for a fully-configured appliance, pricing for the S2100-ES2 will vary based on capacity, performance and ReadyRestore options.
