BUSINESS WIRE, August 2, 2004 -
PowerDsine, Ltd. (NASDAQ:PDSN), a leading provider of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, announced today the winners of the PowerDsine Educational Grant Program which was launched April 6 and offered $100,000 worth of PoE Midspan products to educational institutions operating in the United States and Canada.
Power over Ethernet Midspan products allow IT managers at educational institutions to use their legacy Ethernet switches to deliver electrical power over Ethernet cabling to PoE-ready devices, such as wireless LAN (WLAN) access points, voice over IP (VoIP) phones and IP network security cameras.
PowerDsine believes that universities and schools are beginning to realize the benefits of using PoE to facilitate deployments of technologies, such as WLAN, VOIP and IP security cameras, in an effort to provide more reliable, flexible and cost-effective voice telephony and Internet access services to their faculty and staff, as well as a more secure campus environment.
"We are very happy to share our technology and assist educational institutions with the roll out new applications," said PowerDsine CEO Igal Rotem. "Educational institutions who participated in the program were both first time users of PoE in their networks, as well as those who wanted to use PoE Midspans in conjunction with the expansion of existing Wi-Fi and VoIP networks."
Under PowerDsine's program, twenty-five educational institutions won grants, among those the University of Utah, the University of Delaware, Bethel College of Tennessee, Siena Heights University in Michigan, Lincoln Land Community College in Illinois, Furman College in South Carolina and Carl Sandburg College in Illinois. Each school received a grant for multi-port PoE Midspans based on the school's immediate need for this technology and size of their planned deployment.
"When we learned about PowerDsine's grant program, it didn't take much thought to apply for it," said Richard Nelson, Director of Computing & Information Services at Furman University. "We were looking to use Power over Ethernet technology to expand our wireless LAN and IP telephony deployments so it seemed like a perfect fit. Leveraging PowerDsine's midspan technology, we are able to launch new Internet access and voice services that will benefit our faculty and students immensely while saving the university money in deployment costs."

About Power-over-Ethernet Technology
PoE is a technology for wired Ethernet, the most widely installed local area network technology in use today. PoE allows the electrical power necessary for the operation of each device, to be carried by data cables rather than by separate power cords. It minimizes the number of wires that must be used in order to install the network, resulting in lower cost, less downtime, easier maintenance and greater installation flexibility.
