SUPERCOMM, June 21, 2004 -
Mahi Networks, a leading supplier of multi-service optical transport, grooming, and packet switching solutions, will introduce the Vx7 R2.1 system at SuperComm in Chicago this week. The Vx7 R2.1 provides single wavelength granularity with full 100% optical add/drop capability for OC-48 and OC-192 line-rates, with full wavelength-reuse around a sixteen-node network that spans up to a 1000 km circumference. In addition, the enhanced Vx7 will offer a user-friendly Craft Interface Tool (CIT) with full diagnostic capabilities and end-to-end wavelength path trace capability.
“The Vx7 leverages unprecedented technological advancements to improve carrier network performance and provide rich optical-layer features at the lowest cost,” said Chris Rust, CEO and president of Mahi Networks. “The Vx7’s VersiColorTM wavelength selectable switch, dynamic gain control, rapid transient response, all optical backplane, and tunable lasers enables the industry's first fully automated optical transport layer that enables simple, one-time node engineering with a modular, pay-as-you-grow architecture to ensure low first-in costs.“
Vx7 R2.1 provides a full suite of service interfaces, including SONET, SDH, Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, FICON, ESCON, and 'AnyRate'. The comprehensive mix of interfaces enables carriers to generate revenues with traditional TDM services as well as emerging data services. The Vx7’s wavelength selectable switch and all-optical backplane saves the carrier time and dollars by eliminating the need for external fiber optic jumpers for system connection. These features, in combination with the GMPLS control plane, enable the Vx7 to dynamically and rapidly add new services, nodes, or lambdas to any node without restriction. In addition, with the Vx7’s patented “ADM-on-a-Wavelength” linecard, carriers no longer need to qualify expensive fiber pairs and find space for additional SONET/SDH Add Drop Multiplexers. This combination of a carrier-selectable ADM and automated optical system provides carriers with a much simpler, cost-effective approach to deploying metro core interoffice facilities.
The key new features of Vx7 Release 2.1 include 100% ROADM capability to enable customers to add, drop or reconfigure one or all system wavelengths at any node around the ring remotely – with no service affecting disruptions, as well as a full GUI based Craft Interface Tool (CIT) that provides complete diagnostic capability to assess the health of the optical layer from a remote operations center with end-to-end monitoring of all services.
"A metro regional transport solution must offer cost efficient support of a large TDM/SONET embedded base while flexibly supporting a broad range of new service interfaces combined with flexible wavelength management to be successful," said Michael Kennedy, Managing Partner - Network Strategy Partners. "The Vx7 R2.1 enhancements delivers this essential scale and scope, from low channel count applications to hub node applications with full performance monitoring and diagnostics."
The Vx7 is a carrier-class product that provides a comprehensive set of features enabling key carrier applications that improve overall network performance. SONET/SDH Ring Integration (SRI) is enabled by Mahi’s ADM-on-a-WavelengthTM, and allows carriers to seamlessly integrate SONET/SDH and Data over Transport services with efficient WDM transport and sub-wavelength switching. Extended Service Reach (ESR) extends the multi-service edge by providing distributed switching of SONET and Ethernet services over a 1000 km ROADM network. And RapidADD combines the Vx7’s fully automated optical layer with a robust GMPLS control plane to enable rapid, on-the-fly provisioning of services, wavelengths and Vx7 nodes, providing carriers with the ability to grow their networks seamlessly even in the face of uncertain traffic demands.
